The influence of scale cortisol on the elemental composition and (sub-)cellular structure of the scale in carp (Cyprinus carpio)

StressChron Framework:

Project code048
Research areaUnravelling the fundamentals of glucocorticoid actions across vertebrates
Research topicMechanism(s) of glucocorticoid incorporation
SpeciesCarp (Cyprinus carpio)

The research goal is providing a detailed view on if and possibly how scale cortisol influences the elemental composition and structure of the scale in carp (Cyprinus carpio). In particular, to (i) determine the elemental composition and distribution in the scale under chronic stress conditions and subsequent effects on bone (de)formation, and (ii) provide a correlated (sub-)cellular structure and elemental distribution within the scale which is of utmost importance in understanding scale glucocorticoid incorporation. Hereby, elemental and structural data on scales are correlated to scale cortisol levels quantified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS).
